Work Smarter... Not Harder!

Don't work harder, work smarter!

It is pointless to be busy without a purpose. When people are running all over the place, heroically telling others that they are 'very busy', they burn away the hours of their precious day because they were too busy working on everything but things that cut down their busy schedule (like delegating, outsourcing or organizing). Most hardworking yet unsuccessful people tend to fall into this category.

When you are too busy to think, it is the time to slow down and strategize. You must never work in such a way that the harder you work, the harder you are required to maintain your current state or have difficulty in expansion. This is not good business practice and requires strategic planning.

In fact, for the first time in history, human beings are actually spending more hours working for less and less. This is because of the demand of our fast-paced society where overtime schedules and lower pay raises are prevalent (hence putting in more hours for the same pay!)

Most employees fall into the description above. A person with a true business mindset will learn how to delegate and outsource to the right talent. If you truly want to succeed in business, you must develop good management skills. Not just because you have to manage your own team, but you must deal with people not within your company such as suppliers, customers and government regulatory boards.

Successful people don't just work hard; they learn to plan each and every one of their moves just like a chess game. It is silly just to get busy. You have to be proactive and seek out solutions rather than reactive and wait for things to happen. You may be surprised; some of the most situational reactive people are some of the busiest people around. They develop a false sense of security by just being busy. They are not aware that their accomplishments at the end of the day may not be as rewarding as they thought it would be.

One of the ways to work smarter is to invest in the right tools or vehicles to get you to where you need to go. Imagine a fourth generation farmer who plows the field by himself compared to an 18 year old kid from the city with no farming experience but is armed with a tractor to get the job done. Who do you think will do a more effective job, the farmer or the city boy? The difference is in the tools. Learning to use the right tools, coupled with a good attitude and proper time management will almost guarantee success for anyone!

One of the most low-cost, high-profit methods to leverage on is the Internet. The Internet offers unparalleled leverage for a relatively low cost. You can literally contact millions and millions of people all over the world with a click of a button. This is a good example of using tools wisely.

Remember to always take time out to plan, strategize and prioritize the important tasks. And most important of all, learn to enjoy the journey.
